This is the fifth publication of Indian Innovators Association. Earlier publications; Creating Demand for Local Innovations, Andhra Entrepreneurs-past, present and future, Patent IPR Licensing- Technology Commercialisation-Innovation Marketing and Top 100 Indian Innovations (2022) were well received by the innovator community (www.motguru.com) Every publication is intended to fill a gap in the learning space. Here the gap is information on product innovations from India. Aiming that we excluded innovations in Software, E-Commerce, Financial innovations, juggad etc and targeted physical, embodied, systematic innovation, for this compilation. We received nearly 1000 nominations, directly or indirectly and thank all innovators & stakeholders for helping us in this task. Hundred innovations are selected from out of the sourced documents. For selection, equal weight is given to ‘innovator profile’ and ‘innovation merit’. To give a global perspective, we included Global innovators of Indian origin and provided technology history & key patents along with profiles of resident Indian innovators. To supplement information furnished along with nomination, additional details are collected from publicly available documents on the net. Photos of inventors/founders are taken from their LinkedIn profiles which are also cited in select cases.

Health technology assessment (HTA) is a multidisciplinary approach that uses clinical effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, policy and ethical perspectives to provide evidence upon which rational decisions on the use of health technologies can be made. It can be used for a single stand-alone technology (e.g. a drug, a device), complex interventions (e.g. a rehabilitation service) and can also be applied to individual patient care and to public health. It is a tool for enabling the assessment and comparison of health technologies using the same metric of cost-effectiveness. This process benefits the patient, the health service, the healthcare payer and the technology producer as only technologies that are considered cost-effective are promoted for widespread use. This leads to greater use of effective technologies and greater health gain. The decision-making process in healthcare in India is complex owing to multiplicity of organizations with overlapping mandates. Often the decision-making is not evidence-based and there is no mechanism of bridging the gap between evidence and policy. Elsewhere, HTA is a frequently used tool in informing policy decisions in both resource-rich and resource-poor countries. Despite national organizations producing large volumes of research and clinical guidelines, India has not yet introduced a formal HTA programme. The incremental growth in healthcare products, services, innovation in affordable medical devices and a move towards universal healthcare, needs to be underpinned with an evidence-base which focuses on effectiveness, safety, affordability and acceptability to maximize the benefits that can be gained with a limited healthcare budget. Establishing HTA as a formal process in India, independent of healthcare providers, funders and technology producers, together with a framework for linking HTA to policy-making, would help ensure that the population gets better access to appropriate healthcare in the future.
MOMENTUM IN PENETRATION OF TECHNOLOGY IN INDIAN HEALTHCARE: A WAY FORWARD

The epidemiological transition, in the form of rapid structural changes in disease patterns and global flow of patients across borders in the form of ‘medical tourism’ have changed the patterns of demand and supply of healthcare services in the country and insisted for reshaping the Indian health care delivery system. Considering the fast pace of innovations and rapid growth of technology, healthcare providers started inclining towards the technological aspect of healthcare delivery. Telemedicine, mHealth, Electronic Health Record (EHR) / Electronic Medical Record (EMR), Health/Hospital Management Information System (HMIS) and Digital Health Knowledge Resources (DHKR) are some of the technologies, gained wide acceptance in the sector. This progressive reshaping of healthcare industry has increased the demand for deployment of robust IT infrastructure, trained healthcare personnel, informed decision makers and better financial management in the country to reduce the challenges for better utilization of HIT potential. In this regard, beside existing efforts by Government and private sector, there is urgent need of capacity building of health professionals on available tools and incorporate the IT component in medical curriculum.
