  • Optimus Prime's evolution showed him grow from a strong leader to a soldier with a dark side and themany struggles that came with those changes.

The Transformers franchise launched in 1984 with the Hasbro line of toys. Based on the conflict between the heroic Autobots and the hostile Decepticons, Transformers has a myriad of stories in the form of comics, movies, and animated television series that accompany the toys. The first media tie-ins were originally created with the intent of helping sell the toys, but what really makes Transformers popular isn’t the exciting merchandise but the characters that are at the center of the stories. No character embodies this better than the leader of the Autobots, Optimus Prime.

While Michael Bay’s Transformers films reignited interest in the franchise beginning in 2007, the success of the live-action films owes a great deal to the animated series and comic books that came before it. These stories established the characteristics of the Autobots, especially Optimus Prime. The selfless leader of the Autobots is dedicated to courage, honor, and unity, making him the ideal hero throughout almost every version of the Transformers universe.

The multiple stories of Transformers exist in so many forms that it can be complicated to follow, and really, there’s no single Transformers story as much as there are consistent themes. The first era of Transformers media, ranging from 1984 to 1993, is a line of toys, comic books, and television series that are all now known as Generation 1. The Generation 1 toy line was released from 1984 to 1990; the G1 animated television series, including a movie, ran from September 1984 to November 1987; and the original Marvel Comics series was published from 1984 to 1991. While all of these tie-ins are referred to as Generation 1, the stories told in each don’t always line up and present differing versions of events in the Transformers universe. The next era of Transformers is known as Generation 2, and it lasted from 1992-1995. The Generation 2 toy line was accompanied by a comic series of the same name that ran from 1993-1994. While there was no corresponding television show for Generation 2 of Transformers, the original animated series that had been released for Generation 1 was edited and re-released during Generation 2 in 1993.

The following years had Transformers media tie-ins that were even less coordinated than previous eras. The next television show was Beast Wars: Transformers, airing from 1996 to 1999. Beast Wars eventually developed into its own universe with more comic book series. Transformers: Robots in Disguise was an animated Japanese show that aired in 2000, with an English dubbed version airing in America in 2001 to 2002. The Unicron Trilogy was a series of the three TV shows Transformers: Armada, Transformers: Energon, and Transformers: Cybertron that aired from August 2002 to December 2005. At the same time, Transformers comics were produced by Dreamwave Productions in 2001 and then by IDW Publishing in 2005.

Optimus Prime’s Simple Beginnings

Rise of the Beasts Sets Disappointing Box Office Mark for the Transformers Franchise

The original toy version of Optimus Prime involved three different parts that combined to form a single entity. Hiding among humans disguised as a Freightliner FL86 semi-truck, Optimus Prime consisted of the truck cab, which was the Brain Center, the trailer, which was the Combat Center, and Roller, which was a buggy that rode inside the trailer and served as the Scout Car. The original design for Optimus Prime specified that these three parts could all feel anything that happened to one of them, and they were all simultaneously Optimus Prime. This notion was a little technically complicated to continue, especially in terms of storytelling, so Optimus Prime quickly became understood as the complete robot unit. Any parts of Optimus Prime that can disconnect from his humanoid form, like the buggy, are now simply accessories to the Autobot.

In the very first Marvel tie-in comics, Optimus Prime was a simple gladiator on his homeworld of Cybertron, that was completely inhabited by sentient robotic life. This version of Optimus Prime was an uncomplicated fighter. When the civil war broke out between Autobots and Decepticons, Optimus Prime worked his way up the ranks, and it was his decisions during the war that led to the Autobots and Decepticons crash landing on Earth millions of years in the past, only to reawaken in the 1980s. This version of Optimus Prime was also quick to destroy himself when he violated his own code, as opposed to later versions of Optimus Prime that learned from his mistakes and sought redemption for any transgressions.

Transformers: This Decepticon Served as Inspiration for Megatron in the Live-Action Movies

The 98-episode long animated television series Transformers is where Optimus Prime was developed into the character that fans know and love today. Optimus Prime was given a backstory as a dockworker on Cybertron. He was originally known as the dockworker Orion Pax and had a romantic interest and a best friend. When the Decepticons arrive, Orion is tricked by Megatron and wounded when the Decepticons attack the dock warehouses. He is then reforged into the stronger Autobot Optimus Prime and takes up the Matrix of Leadership, proceeding to lead the Autobots in the war against the Decepticons.

The burden of leadership drives Optimus Prime to become the best version of himself. He presents a strong and charismatic persona to his fellow Autobots, but he is deeply concerned about the well-being of all sentient life. Unlike the simple fighter of the very first Marvel comics, the animated series sees Optimus Prime become a caring commander. In the animated movie that takes place after season two of the animated television show, Optimus Prime is killed by Megatron when the two face off in Autobot City. While Optimus Prime is brought back in season three of the television series, this begins a pattern of death and resurrection that encapsulates his willingness to sacrifice himself for others.

The comics and series that came during and after Generation 2 of Transformers often deal with alternate universes, time travel, or events in the past, such as Beast Wars, which is set in Earth’s prehistory. This gives audiences a chance to see robots and dinosaurs interact, but it mostly follows in the path of the established characterization of Optimus Prime. Optimus Prime fights for and defends all sentient life to the utmost of his ability. In the Unicron Trilogy, beginning with Transformers: Armada, a darker side of Optimus Prime embellishes his character. This version of Optimus Prime is a soldier immersed in war, and it has clearly taken its toll. Optimus Prime once again proves his selflessness when he sacrifices himself to save Earth, although he later returns. Unicron prompts Optimus Prime to consider some of his beliefs, and it’s this self-reflection that creates the well-rounded character that modern audiences appreciate. The animated Optimus Prime ends up a paragon, valuing unity and life. He strives to be the ideal leader and warrior, considers the dark sides of conflict, and all that while being an awesome sentient robot in disguise.
